Description

Join us on a return guided day trip around Velddrif where you can experience the area to your heart's delight in combination with a Berg River boat trip.

Velddrif is an interesting stop, as it is so authentically West Coast that you literally smell the salt before you see the salt pans or realise that you are close to the ocean. Dominated by the salt marsh or salt pan on one side and the Berg River on the other, you cannot be held liable for thinking that you have done a bit of time travel. The town is largely dependent on the fishing industry and the passing tourists who love the laidback lifestyle in the dorpie (small town). Port Owen Marina is a completely different kettle of fish and is a testament to what can be done with good planning and vision. The Sea Fisheries found a home in Laaiplek in 2009, after being in various other places including Hout Bay. Bokkomlaan is a short gravel road with a really big personality of the most authentic kind.

This is the best way to learn of the culture and heritage of this region.

A fully guided experience awaits you throughout your journey. Forget about traffic and let us lead you through the day.

Itinerary

Hop on the tour at the Atlantis Dunes and get off at Velddrif.

After you step off the coach on the R27 by Velddrif, you are met by your tourist guide who will guide you for the rest of the day, with every day touching on different historical spots.

From Velddrif, we'll head to the Berg River. A 1.5 hour boat trip on the Berg River makes for a pleasant way to spot the 30 000 birds such as flamingoes, pelicans, spoonbills, and herons in the area. Take a picnic on board or open a bottle of bubbly and enjoy a pleasant guided trip led by Captain Tollie Bezuidenhout. Charlie's Brewery is also in the marina and you can enjoy a lunch and a beer (or two) after you have completed the river cruise. Along the river banks you will see the local fishermen making their living off the local harders, which they dry into bokkoms.
